Knitting under the Midnight Sun – the world’s most beautiful sea voyage – with ARNE & CARLOS!
Have you ever wanted daylight 24 hours a day so you could knit even more? Now you have the opportunity to do just that, together with ARNE & CARLOS!
We have the pleasure of inviting you on a Knitting Cruise under the Midnight Sun on the Coastal Steamer “Hurtigruten”. Our knitting cruises are a huge success and this is our third cruise, but the first time under the Midnight Sun! If you’re drawn to knitting and design, you may already know ARNE & CARLOS, and their international success as knitting fashionistas. Lately they have become knitting superstars, and many people, both in the Europe, US and Asia, are familiar with their work, both through their inspiring books and social media presence.
ARNE & CARLOS
Their home and creative base is a disused railway station about 170 km north of Oslo, in the mountainous region of Valdres. Here, the old railway station has been converted into their own designer studio. From this idyllic location, surrounded by mountains, placid lakes and dense forests, they create their arts and crafts inspired by old Norwegian and Scandiavian traditions, but adding their own unique touch. They share their creativity through their blog, youtube channel and knitting books. Their first book, “Knitted Christmas balls” became a bestseller both in Norway and the US. ARNE & CARLOS will join us during the cruise, and inspire us with their humourous talks and workshops. They bring a Scandinavian flavour to both knitted and crocheted items that make them uniquely attractive.
Three seasons on one cruise
During springtime, the contrast between southern and northern Norway is huge. From Bergen to Trondheim you will sail through a lush and green landscape in bloom – and close to summer temperatures! Further north in the Arctic region, winter struggles to maintain its grip. As you cross the Arctic Circle sailing toward the North Cape and Finnmark – it is usually full winter, and from mid-May the midnight sun offers 24 hours of daylight, even if the temperature and weather is more like winter. It is like experiencing three seasons on one cruise!
Summer is the most popular time of the year to explore Norway’s coast. The long, light days during the summer months seem to energize both nature and people. Even as far south as Bergen you can experience 19 hours of daylight. Flowers bloom, rivers fill with fish, and giant waterfalls cascade toward the ocean, creating a picture-perfect setting for a summer vacation cruise.
From Bergen to Kirkenes
The world’s most beautiful sea voyage will take us from Bergen to Kirkenes. The backdrop, a beautiful coastline, with thousands of islands and inlets, fiords and mountains. We board the grand ship M/S Finnmarken, which we think is the perfect venue for a knitting cruise! Cosy atmosphere, and plenty of little corners and hubs where the guests can gather to knit and talk. The “MS Finnmarken” is the only ship in the Coastal Steamer Company with both an outdoor swimming pool and outdoor Jacuzzi, so make sure you pack your swimwear! During the sailing towards the North, we will knit, learn about knitting traditions and listen to exciting talks by ARNE & CARLOS, maybe even learn a new thing or two. The cosy and inviting lounges onboard welcome us, we might have a glass or two, while enjoying the ever changing and dramatic coastline outside the panoramic windows.
Enjoy the local cuisine
During the cruise we can enjoy the local cuisine Hurtigruten is well known for. The philosophy behind the food served is ”Taste the Coast”, using ingredients of local origin, fresh fish like cod, Arctic char and meat like reindeer. A varied range of exciting excursions are on offer along the route.
The cruise begins on the 28th May, and we sail towards the North.
International air transport: We offer reasonable rates for international feeders, from Asia, Europe, North- and South-America.
Flight-package from the U.S: We offer an optional flight-package for air travel from/to New York at a set price, specially designed to fit the cruising times. We can also offer individual travel arrangements with other airlines, and from other cities.
Bergen – Ålesund – Geirangerfjorden – Trondheim – Bodø – Tromsø – Honningsvåg – Nordkapp – Kirkenes
28th May – Bergen
Embarkation from approx 4 pm. Departure at 10.30 pm.
At 6 pm we meet in the Panorama Lounge and enjoy a welcome drink before dinner at 6.30 pm, which will be a tasty buffet, made with the best coastal ingredients. We sail north from Bergen along the Hjeltefjord, the same route the Vikings used on their way to the Shetland Islands and beyond. We are heading to the High North! Spend the rest of the evening relaxing and admiring the spectacular landscapes, either from the deck or in the panorama lounge.
29th May – Ålesund and Geirangerfjorden
If you wake up early the next day, you can enjoy the breathtaking beauty of the Nordfjord, followed by a delicious breakfast. As we sail past the West Cape, we enter the open ocean before navigating through skerries and islands to reach Ålesund. Distinguished by its numerous spires, towers, and ornate buildings, Ålesund is renowned for its beautiful Art Nouveau architecture. A devastating fire in 1904 burned a large proportion of the city to the ground, and it was rebuilt in the fashionable style of the time: Art Nouveau.
In Ålesund the ship offers a variety of excursions you can join, a visit to Atlanterhavsparken which is a huge saltwater aquarium. For the sporty and adventurous, the city can also be explored from a sea kayak!
After the visit to Ålesund, we set course for the spectacular UNESCO-listed Geirangerfjord, passing steep, 2,500 ft cliffs and impressive waterfalls along the way. Far from the tourist hustle and bustle, its seclusion and unspoiled natural landscape are what give this fjord its special character. We take our guests past steep rock walls which you can nearly reach out and touch, emerald-green meadows, lonely mountain farms, and small villages.
30th May – Trondheim – the old capital
Few large cities have managed to preserve their intimacy as effectively as Norway’s third largest city, Trondheim. Viking King Olav Tryggvason, founded this ancient city in 997. Join an optional excursion to Norway’s national shrine, Nidaros Cathedral, the country’s only Gothic-style cathedral, built over the burial place of St. Olav (Tryggvason), Norway’s patron saint. Here you can marvel at the cathedral’s incredible architectural details and exquisite artwork. During spring and summer, we continue to the Ringve Museum of Musical History, where the history of Norway’s music is brought to life. This beautiful manor house is surrounded by a wonderful botanical garden, and provides fantastic views of both the city and the fjord.
Departure from Trondheim is at 12 o’clock noon and the cruise continues through the Arctic Circle into the wild North, land of the Midnight Sun. The ship sets a northwest course, passing the beautiful Kjeungskjær lighthouse and numerous islets and rocky reefs. After passing through the narrow Stokksund, the ship heads toward charming Rørvik. This afternoon you will enjoy attending ARNE & CARLOS’ inspirational talk.
31 MAY – BODØ
Today we cross the Arctic Circle! This invisible line is situated at 66 degrees, 33 minutes North and demarcates the Arctic region. In summer, this means enjoying 24-hour daylight and the midnight sun. If you are sailing in Arctic waters for the first time, you can participate in a daytime Arctic Circle ceremony out on deck.
At 12.30 pm we arrive in the harbour of Bodø. From here we can recommend a visit to Norsk Flid – a traditional handicraft shop with Norwegian sweaters and other knitwear, with focus on traditional patterns and techniques. A large collection of knitting and weaving yarns and needlework accessories are on offer, as well as cardigans, sweaters, dresses, arts and crafts, silk scarfs, pewter and rose painted items.
If you feel adventurous, you can join a RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat) safari to the legendary Saltstraumen! This is the world’s most powerful tidal current (tickets on sale on board). There is also the chance to see sea eagles and other wildlife.
Later the same afternoon, we spot the 3,000 ft high Lofoten Wall on the horizon. Tucked between tall mountains, majestic granite cliffs, and white-sand beaches, seeing beautiful Lofoten is a truly extraordinary experience. The additional charm of the Lofoten Islands is revealed in its small, picturesque fishing villages with their bohemian atmosphere.
After departure, at 3 pm, you are welcome to take part in ARNE & CARLOS’ workshop and maybe learn some new knitting techniques.
Dinner at 6.30 pm.
1 June – Tromsø
‘The world’s most beautiful sea voyage’ continues northwards to Tromsø, where we arrive at 2.15 pm. At the very top of continental Europe and 350 km north of the Arctic Circle, we find Tromsø, this remote, but surprisingly vibrant city, which is the reason for its nickname ‘Paris of the North’. Also called ‘Gateway to the Arctic’, with its wide horizons and clean air. Here, we will have a few hours to explore the city at or own leisure. The harbour is very close to the city centre, and just a short walk from the ship, we find all the main attractions. It’s a lovely place for a stroll, or you may join the ‘Hurtigrutens Historic Polar Walk’ (tickets can be bought on board).
If you want to experience peace and tranquility on the sea, why not join a kayaking excursion? Paddle in the waters off the Tromsø coastline with the mountains as a stunning backdrop. This is a great way to silently glide through these pristine waters and get close to marine wildlife.
Dinner at 6.30 pm
2 June – North Cape – At the Top of the World
Now we have arrived at the northernmost point of our cruise; the town Honningsvåg, and from this port it is possible to visit the famous North Cape.
Standing on the North Cape – a large mountain plateau that ends in a 307 metre high cliff that plunges into the sea – is a breathtaking experience. Here you can marvel at the views of the Barents Sea. Located at 71° north at the Magerøya island, the North Cape Plateau is the main attraction in the area and a popular destination for travellers. The excursion to North Cape can be bought on board.
This last evening on our cruise, we will enjoy a rich sea food buffet, with delicacies from the sea and coast.
Dinner 6.30 pm.
3 JUN – KIRKENES
The vistas become more dramatic as we approach Kirkenes. We arrive early in nearby Vadsø, and just after breakfast, we arrive in Kirkenes. At 30° East, Kirkenes is farther east than St. Petersburg and Istanbul! It is also Hurtigruten’s turning point for the return trip west southbound along the coast. Kirkenes is known as the capital of the Barents region and the gateway to the east.
The Russian frontier is a just few miles away from Kirkenes. You may find it intriguing that the local road signs are written in both Norwegian and Russian. Kirkenes also boasts several fascinating small museums recounting the remote region’s remarkably.
The “MS Finnmarken” arrives at Kirkenes at 9 am, and we will be transferred to the airport for our southward flight.

COASTAL STEAMER; HURTIGRUTEN M/S FINNMARKEN
On board the grand ship ”MS Finnmarken” we combine comfort with a relaxed and informal atmosphere. The lounges and cabins are beautifully appointed and decorated, inspired by the Art Nouveau style as this was the latest fashion when the first ship by the same name was launched in the early 20th century. The style is elegant, with rich colours, bold patterns and lavish ornamentation. The “MS Finnmarken” is also the only ship in the Company with both Jacuzzi (Hot Tub) and swimming pool outside on deck.
The pace of the tour is charming and leisurely, as most of it goes in slow motion, which is 18 knots cruising along the coast between Bergen and Kirkenes. This means you have plenty of time to enjoy the countryside that glides past and constantly gets more dramatic the further north the ship sails.
